FICCI and BSA roll out Intellectual Property Awareness Campaign
Underpinning the creation of awareness amongst SMEs and other enterprises to mitigate the risks of IP rights violation, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and BSA have jointly announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) against piracy. This MoU will help to build capacities for law-enforcement agencies on Intellectual Property (IP).
As per this three-year agreement, FICCI and BSA will conduct a series of activities to create a favourable environment for IP protection in India as well as curb the piracy rate. FICCI will also organize awareness building programmes for the industry, particularly MSMEs on the risks and business costs associated with using pirated software.
Jyoti Vij, Deputy Secretary General, FICCI, said, We play a leading role in acknowledging the need to protect Intellectual property. With this campaign, we intend to create awareness of this important national issue among all sections of the society, including policy-makers, legislators, and the Indian public at large.
"The Government of India has already taken steps to foster the protection of intellectual property rights and we believe efforts like these will add further momentum. It is also encouraging to see that there is a growing realization among many Indian SMEs that pirated software can have negative financial implications for their businesses in the long run, particularly if they are doing business with global companies,” said Yolynd Lobo, Director for India, BSA.
As a first phase of the partnership, the campaign will be rolled out in Gujarat and Rajasthan with capacity building workshops for the law-enforcement agencies such as police and customs in these states to help strengthen government machinery to handle IP rights infringement issues.
