Traditional outlook of Indians limits usage of mobile services, says Survey
A recent survey on the usage of smartphones by Indians was conducted by Nielsen. The survey revealed that 16% of the respondents surveyed used their smartphones for making credit card payment and only 15% use them for making utility bill payments. Majority of the users use smartphone applications for the purpose of social networking and entertainment.
Compared to a global landscape, India has a long way to go in terms of mobile payments and shopping. As per a MasterCard Mobile Payments Readiness Index (MPRI), India was 21st among 34 countries with the score of 31.4 on a scale of 100. The slow growth in mobile payment services can be due to the fact that the consumers in India have not yet fully embraced the mobile payments. Majority of the Indian consumers belong to the conservative segment, who are traditional in their outlook, cautious in their approach towards purchases and are slow decision-makers.
Apart from this, there are other mobile services in the area of shopping, travel and healthcare which still haven’t been explored completely by the Indian consumers.
