The new AI-powered feature condenses thousands of user reviews into short, readable summaries, helping users quickly understand an app’s pros and cons before downloading it
Google is enhancing the Play Store experience with the rollout of Gemini-powered AI review summaries, designed to make app discovery faster and more convenient. The feature uses Google’s advanced generative AI model, Gemini, to automatically summarize user feedback into a concise overview highlighting the most common positives and negatives of each app.
Smarter summaries for informed choices
The new feature appears under the “Ratings and Reviews” section in the Play Store with a bold heading titled “Users are saying”, followed by a short paragraph summarizing key user opinions. At the bottom, a disclaimer notes that the content was “Summarized by Google AI.”
In addition, users can interact with topic chips—such as “performance,” “interface,” or “file management”—to explore more detailed feedback on specific aspects of the app. This structure allows users to make quicker, better-informed decisions without scrolling through hundreds of individual reviews.
According to reports, the AI summaries were first spotted in Play Store version 48.5.23-31 and are now rolling out to users in phases. While not all users have access yet, the gradual rollout suggests Google is testing the feature’s stability and accuracy before making it widely available.
Competing in the AI experience race
Google’s move mirrors similar AI-driven efforts by other tech giants. Apple introduced App Store review summaries for iOS earlier this year, and Amazon has long used AI to generate product review highlights. By integrating Gemini into the Play Store, Google aims to offer a more intuitive and efficient browsing experience.
The company is likely being cautious following its earlier missteps with AI Overviews in Google Search, which drew attention for producing inaccurate results. Since then, Google has refined its AI systems and introduced an AI Mode for search, providing a more conversational, chatbot-style experience.
With the Gemini integration, Google hopes to make app exploration more intelligent, personalized, and user-friendly—continuing its mission to simplify digital experiences through responsible AI innovation.
