Breaking News
Stripe and NEC Corporation have begun working together to integrate NEC’s face recognition payment service with the Stripe Reader S700 and Stripe Terminal, the unified commerce platform that connects in-store and online payments. The collaboration aims to enable hands-free biometric payments, combining Stripe’s payment technology with NEC’s globally recognized face authentication system to deliver faster and more secure transactions.
The companies said the integration will allow customers to make payments simply by presenting their face, eliminating the need for cards, cash, or mobile devices. NEC’s biometric system, which has repeatedly ranked first in accuracy tests conducted by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will be paired with Stripe’s global payment infrastructure to support merchants seeking frictionless, secure, and user-friendly checkout experiences.
Stripe and NEC plan to demonstrate the new payment experience at the Singapore FinTech Festival from November 12 to 14, where attendees will be able to try face-based transactions using the Stripe Reader S700.
The Stripe Terminal platform allows businesses to unify their physical and digital commerce operations, offering real-time analytics through a single dashboard across multiple markets. The Reader S700, a Wi-Fi-enabled payment terminal available in 25 countries, features smartphone-like functionality and can be used either as a countertop or handheld device.
“Through this collaboration, Stripe is proud to support NEC’s world-renowned face recognition technology, enabling its use for payments through our unified commerce solution, Stripe Terminal,” said Daniel Heffernan, Product Lead for Stripe Japan. “By taking this step, we aim to enhance the shopping experience for consumers around the world.”
Kazuhisa Shimizu, Corporate Senior Vice President and Managing Director of NEC’s Financial Solutions Division, said the partnership underscores how combining NEC’s biometrics with Stripe’s payment infrastructure can redefine in-person transactions. “We believe the advanced customizability of Stripe Terminal will help address a wide range of challenges in face-to-face payment scenarios,” he said. “By uniting NEC’s world-class face recognition with Stripe’s globally trusted platform, we aim to create a payment experience that is safe, simple, and universally accessible.”
NEC noted that its facial-recognition systems are already deployed in airports, stadiums, and public-safety environments worldwide. Integrating that capability with Stripe’s commerce ecosystem marks the companies’ next step toward mainstream biometric payment adoption—a future where customers can complete purchases securely and effortlessly, without reaching for a wallet or phone.
