Land-based casinos choose a more sustainable path

Several players at the forefront of the gaming market are opting to invest in renewable energy. That is, energy generated from natural sources that are constantly replenished. This includes sources such as wind power, solar power, hydroelectric power and so-called geothermal energy. In the case of a physical casino, renewable energy can be used to power the casino and help reduce its carbon footprint.
For example, a casino could install solar panels on the roof to generate electricity or use geothermal energy to heat and cool the building. Using renewable energy can also help them save money when electricity bills come due, as it is often more cost-effective than using non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels.
In recent years, we've seen more and more of the heaviest products on the market choose the greener path. In 2019, Macau-based Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd, one of the world's largest casino operators today, signed an agreement with Man Io Energy to install the city's largest array of solar panels to power two Melco Resorts properties. This included a system consisting of 18,000 solar panels covering nearly 30,000 square meters of the roofs of their City of Dreams and Studio City resorts.
Last year MGM Resorts in Las Vegas was able to unveil their long-planned The Mega Solar Array project, which is their largest investment in renewable energy to date. It may also be the biggest environmental project in the industry as a whole. What does that mean? In short, it's about 640 acres in the desert northeast of Las Vegas, filled with 323,000 solar cells that will supply the operator's empire with electricity. It includes a total of 36,000 hotel rooms. According to the company itself, this should be enough to supply 90 percent of their energy needs. In addition, they see the launch of the Mega Solar Array as a milestone in MGM's goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 45 percent per square foot by 2025. It currently stands at about 65 million square feet.
Las Vegas Sands Corporation, the world's largest casino operator, also continues to invest in a greener future. The company, which operates The Venetian Resort and The Palazzo Tower institutions, has taken a number of measures, among others. These include a recycled water filtration system that irrigates their largest buildings. To facilitate nanofiltration, 12 million liters of water are used each year for gardening, eliminating it completely from the grid. While the Palazzo is currently being completely renovated to meet the industry's environmental industry standards, they are also achieving this with The Venetian Resort. Among other things, this includes the conversion of all lighting to LED lights, as well as many other activities that use less energy.
