Once the 4G network stabilizes, BSNL plans to upgrade it to support 5G services across the country.
Tejas Networks—part of the Tata Group—has successfully completed the supply of critical telecom gear to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) for deploying 1 lakh 4G and 5G sites across the country. The milestone marks the execution of a ₹7,492-crore deal awarded in August 2023, reinforcing Tejas Networks’ position as a key player in India’s push for indigenous telecom infrastructure.
The massive contract, secured by a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-led consortium, followed rigorous field trials and government-mandated testing. The Tejas-BSNL partnership is being hailed as a pivotal step in advancing the government’s Make in India initiative, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign telecom equipment and bolstering national capability in critical sectors.
"We shipped more than 100,000 sites for the BSNL 4G/5G network. This is one of the largest single-vendor RAN networks in the world ever delivered in record time. So I think I'm very proud of the team and also the consortium of TCS, C-DoT and our customer BSNL for actually helping us make this happen," said, Anand Athreya, CEO & MD, Tejas Networks during the company's recent earnings call.

Under this project, Tejas Networks supplied advanced 4G and 5G-ready radio access and transport network equipment. BSNL is now gearing up to launch its 4G services in June 2025—nearly a decade after private telecom operators introduced 4G in India. The network will initially cater to underserved rural and semi-urban regions, helping bridge the digital divide. Once stabilized, the infrastructure will be seamlessly upgraded to support India’s growing demand for 5G connectivity, placing BSNL in direct competition with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel in the next phase of mobile internet evolution.
The deployment of 1 lakh 4G and 5G sites is expected to significantly boost mobile data speeds, network reliability, and coverage across the country. It also signals a major push in Indian 5G network expansion and reaffirms the role of domestic companies like Tejas Networks in shaping the future of telecom in India.
This mega deal is not just a commercial success but also a strategic victory for the Indian government’s vision of building a self-reliant digital infrastructure. As BSNL prepares for its long-awaited 4G rollout, followed by a phased 5G rollout, the partnership with Tejas Networks marks a new chapter in the modernization of public telecom services in India.
