The addition of Veo 2 follows the launch of Dream Screen last year, which allowed creators to use AI-generated backgrounds through text prompts
YouTube Shorts is introducing a major upgrade to its platform with the integration of Veo 2, the latest version of Google DeepMind’s text-to-video model. This enhancement enables creators to generate complete AI-powered video clips, expanding the creative potential of Shorts content.
The addition of Veo 2 follows the launch of Dream Screen last year, which allowed creators to use AI-generated backgrounds through text prompts. Now, with Veo 2, creators can generate full video clips directly from text input, offering an entirely new level of storytelling flexibility.
According to YouTube’s official blog, Veo 2 supports various video styles and subjects, making it a versatile tool for creators. It also enhances the realism and speed of AI-generated content, while providing options for customization, including different video styles, cinematic effects, and lens options.

Dina Berrada, YouTube’s Director of Product, emphasized that the new AI model delivers more realistic content by better understanding real-world physics and human movement. She also noted that the platform now generates videos more quickly, significantly reducing waiting times for creators.
Introducing AI video transparency
To ensure transparency, YouTube will implement DeepMind’s SynthID watermarking tool, which embeds digital markers into AI-generated videos. This technology will allow users to easily identify AI-created content, maintaining transparency for both creators and viewers.
The new features are user-friendly, allowing creators to produce both video backgrounds and complete AI video clips. To create a background, users open the Shorts camera, select Green Screen, choose Dream Screen, and enter a text prompt. For AI video clips, users can open the media picker, tap Create, and input a text prompt, along with specifying the desired video length.
Currently available to creators in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, the new features will soon expand to additional regions. YouTube remains committed to providing creators with innovative AI tools to inspire creativity and bring their ideas to life.See What’s Next in Tech With the Fast Forward Newsletter
