Huawei and China Unicom have jointly launched China’s first 10G broadband network, marking a significant leap in internet infrastructure. The high-speed network is powered by the cutting-edge 50G PON (Passive Optical Network) technology. Upgrades to the core architecture of the optical fiber access network have enabled a dramatic performance boost—pushing speeds from gigabit to 10G levels while slashing latency to just a few milliseconds.
In a real-world demo, a household connected to the new network recorded download speeds of 9,834 Mbps and upload speeds of 1,008 Mbps, with latency as low as three milliseconds, the report said.
The network utilizes Huawei's advanced 50G Passive Optical Network (PON) technology, which has been enhanced to deliver 10G speeds.
The rollout in Sunan County is part of a broader initiative to upgrade regional broadband capabilities, with plans to expand to other areas in Hebei Province. This development positions China at the forefront of global broadband capabilities, outpacing many nations including the UAE and Qatar, which currently lead in commercial broadband deployment.
“Downloading a full-length 4K movie, typically 20 GB in size, which would take up to 10 minutes on a 1 Gbps connection, can now be completed in under 20 seconds,” Huawei said in a technical briefing.
