With the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI), many businesses are posting fake or false AI-generated reviews on their Google Business Profiles. To address this issue, Google introduced its Fake Engagement policy documents earlier this month for the UK market and has now updated this policy globally.
Google is implementing stricter measures against business profiles that violate its Fake Engagement policy. Businesses that are found to have fake reviews or engage in deceptive practices will face a range of penalties.
These include the temporary removal of reviews, blocking of new reviews and ratings, and displaying a warning message for profiles that have had fake reviews deleted. This move is part of Google's effort to maintain the integrity of its review system, ensuring that user-generated content is trustworthy and reliable for consumers.
Google Maps is intensifying its efforts to detect and penalize manipulative reviews, targeting those that artificially inflate ratings by using multiple accounts, emulators, modified operating systems, or other tactics to mimic genuine engagement.
Although it remains unclear how Google will precisely identify reviews that break these rules, the consequences for businesses are significant. A prominent warning message will be displayed on profiles that have been caught engaging in such practices, potentially deterring customers from visiting those businesses. This public shaming, along with the removal of suspicious reviews, aims to preserve the platform's credibility and discourage dishonest behavior.
Going forward, the tech giant will start implementing some user-facing penalties. Google will publicly display a warning on a business's Google Maps listing if it is found soliciting fake reviews.
