As part of its broader push to embed generative AI across platforms, Google is rolling out Gemini on Android and introducing scheduled actions in the Gemini app for AI Pro, Ultra, and select Workspace business and education users
Expanding its suite of productivity tools to mobile platforms, Google has begun rolling out its Gemini AI assistant to the Android version of Google Docs. Previously restricted to desktop users with paid Google Workspace plans, Gemini is now available on Android devices for select users with qualifying subscriptions.
The new functionality is accessible through a dedicated Gemini icon, represented by a sparkle symbol, located at the top of the Google Docs interface on Android. Tapping this icon opens a bottom-sheet panel, allowing users to interact with Gemini and leverage AI features directly within the app.
To use Gemini on Android, users must be subscribed to eligible plans such as Google Workspace Business or Enterprise tiers, or hold Gemini Education or Education Premium add-ons. The assistant supports over 20 languages, including French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese, ensuring accessibility for a global user base.
On-the-go AI assistance
Once activated, Gemini can assist with summarizing documents, highlighting key points, answering questions related to document content, and suggesting content improvements. Google emphasizes that these tools are aimed at improving productivity on-the-go—such as quickly understanding lengthy reports or generating quick overviews from complex files.
However, the Android version currently offers a scaled-down experience compared to its desktop counterpart. Notably, features like “Help me write,” “Help me create,” and image generation are not yet available on mobile devices.
The Android rollout is part of Google’s broader push to integrate generative AI across its ecosystem. In a separate update, the company also announced the introduction of scheduled actions within the Gemini app, a feature unveiled during the recent I/O developer conference. This capability is currently being made available to users subscribed to Google AI Pro or Ultra plans, and select Workspace business and education accounts.
While still limited, the mobile expansion of Gemini reflects Google's ongoing efforts to make its AI tools more accessible and versatile, bridging desktop and mobile environments to enhance productivity anytime, anywhere.
