Kavukcuoglu will also serve as a Senior Vice President, reporting directly to CEO Sundar Pichai.
In a strategic move to accelerate its artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, Google has appointed Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Google DeepMind, as its first-ever Chief AI Architect. Kavukcuoglu will also take on the role of Senior Vice President, reporting directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, as the tech giant intensifies its focus on next-generation AI-driven product development.
The appointment highlights Google’s intent to embed advanced AI technologies deeper into its consumer and enterprise offerings, especially as generative AI and machine learning applications see widespread adoption globally. From search and cloud services to productivity tools and Android, Google is rapidly reimagining user experiences through AI, and Kavukcuoglu’s leadership is expected to streamline that transformation.
Kavukcuoglu, a longtime DeepMind veteran, is recognized for his work in reinforcement learning, neural networks, and AI ethics. He will relocate from London to California, but continue to serve as DeepMind’s CTO, reporting to CEO Demis Hassabis, ensuring continuity in DeepMind’s AI research while bridging its innovations with Google’s product roadmap.
His dual role is expected to foster tighter collaboration between DeepMind’s research capabilities and Google’s product teams, enabling faster translation of breakthroughs in AI modeling, large language models (LLMs), and automation into real-world applications.
This leadership change comes amid increasing competition from Microsoft, OpenAI, and Meta, who are also aggressively deploying AI technologies across their ecosystems. By formalizing the Chief AI Architect role, Google signals a renewed commitment to staying at the forefront of the AI revolution.
