Google's new scam detection tool in Messages targets deceptive scams that initially seem harmless but lead to fraud, currently rolling out in English across the US, UK, and Canada, with plans to expand globally
Google has rolled out a suite of new features for Android and Pixel users, focusing on security, convenience, and innovation. The tech giant on March 4 introduced updates to Google Messages, including a highly anticipated AI-powered scam detection tool aimed at curbing the growing prevalence of cyber scams.
As online fraud becomes increasingly common, Google’s AI security features are designed to protect users from deceptive messages. The tool monitors SMS, MMS, and RCS messages in real-time, identifying suspicious patterns and sending alerts when a scam is suspected. Users are then prompted to either dismiss, report, or block the sender.
Google explains that the tool is specifically designed to target deceptive scams that appear harmless at first but ultimately lead to fraudulent schemes. The Google Messages scam detection feature is currently rolling out in English in the United States, the UK, and Canada, with plans to expand to other regions in the future.
This new feature is enabled by default but only monitors messages from unknown contacts, ensuring that personal conversations remain unaffected. Additionally, all message analysis is processed directly on the device, maintaining user privacy and security. Users can opt out of the Google Messages scam detection tool through the Spam Protection settings.
Enhancing messages with location sharing
Alongside the scam detection tool, Google is also introducing live location sharing within Google Messages, a feature similar to what is already offered by WhatsApp. This functionality enables users to share their real-time location with trusted contacts, enhancing safety during meetups or when checking in with loved ones. Location data is encrypted and stored securely, giving users full control over who can view their location and for how long. Regular reminders ensure that users are always aware of their active location-sharing status.
New connectivity and creative tools for Pixel
For Pixel users, Google is unveiling exclusive updates that improve both connectivity and creative capabilities. Pixel 9 users can now link their devices to GoPro cameras or other Pixel phones via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to stream videos from multiple angles, a feature comparable to the multicamera functionality found in Apple devices. Additionally, Google’s Pixel Studio app now allows users to create stylized images and stickers of people, providing an innovative tool while preventing the misuse of realistic AI-generated imagery.
These updates highlight Google’s ongoing commitment to Google security updates and user experience by bolstering security, streamlining communication, and offering new creative tools for Android and Pixel users alike.
