BSNL is gearing up to revolutionize the telecom industry with its upcoming SIM-less calling service. This innovative technology will enable users to make and receive calls without the need for a physical SIM card.
BSNL, Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea are advancing satellite connectivity in India, while Starlink and Amazon have also filed applications to offer similar services.
BSNL's new Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology connects mobile devices via satellites, removing the need for traditional networks. Partnering with Viasat, BSNL enables SIM-free audio and video calls, providing connectivity in remote areas and positioning itself as a leader in satellite communication in India.
The trial basis that enables users to make calls without a SIM card or a mobile network, using a technology called Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) or Wi-Fi Calling.
At India Mobile Congress, BSNL successfully tested satellite calls on a standard Android smartphone using a satellite 36,000 kilometers away. This breakthrough promises to be a crucial lifeline in emergencies, aiding rescue and support during disasters.
This technology allows calls to be made over a Wi-Fi connection instead of relying on traditional cellular networks, which could disrupt the market share of established players like Mukesh Ambani's Jio and Bharti Mittal's Airtel.
With this service, BSNL aims to provide seamless connectivity in areas with limited network coverage, offering an alternative to conventional mobile services and potentially challenging existing telecom giants. This move could potentially disrupt the traditional telecommunications landscape and open up new possibilities for the future of connectivity.
India is gearing up to adopt satellite connectivity, with telecom giants and global players preparing to launch advanced satellite services across the country. This service operates through Wi-Fi or similar connectivity, bypassing the need for conventional network infrastructure.
In addition to D2D, BSNL has introduced a spam-free network designed to reduce unwanted calls and messages, enhancing user experience. Another key service, the ATS Kiosk, provides streamlined access to customer service and telecom support. These offerings reflect BSNL’s commitment to providing alternative and advanced telecom solutions, potentially challenging private competitors and solidifying its position in the market.
