India Records 7.15 Billion Cyberattacks in 2024, with API and Bot Attacks at All-Time High
2025-04-17
India witnessed a major spike in cyberattacks in 2024, especially through APIs and bots, as revealed in the latest Annual State of Application Security Report by Indusface, a global cybersecurity company. The report highlights the rising complexity and volume of cyber threats targeting businesses across the country.
Indusface’s AppTrana platform stopped more than 7.15 billion cyberattacks in India last year, showing a 20% increase in attacks from the first to the last quarter of the year. On average, each protected website faced around 6.9 million attacks, proving that threats are becoming more advanced and widespread.
One of the most alarming findings was the 873% rise in API-related attacks, which have now overtaken traditional web-based attacks. APIs experienced 30% more attacks per host, while DDoS attacks targeting APIs were 166% higher than those aimed at websites. Bot attacks also grew by 48%, affecting nearly 90% of websites monitored, with a major 132% jump during the holiday season.
Ashish Tandon, Founder and CEO of Indusface, said cybercriminals are quickly adapting and using newer methods like APIs and bots, which many companies are still not fully prepared to handle. He stressed the need for businesses to adopt smart security solutions that use both AI technology and human monitoring to protect against these evolving threats.
With tighter regulations from authorities like SEBI and RBI, it’s becoming more important for organizations to actively monitor and patch vulnerabilities. Tandon also pointed out that small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which may lack resources, can benefit from automated and AI-powered Web Application and API Protection (WAAP) tools.
He emphasized that as technology grows, static or outdated security systems won’t be enough. Instead, companies need flexible, AI-led strategies backed by expert oversight to keep up with cybercriminals. The report calls on businesses to modernize their cybersecurity efforts to stay secure in this fast-changing digital environment.
