Indian Government Urges Citizens to Avoid Sensitive Transactions on Public Wi-Fi

 

 

 

As part of its ongoing Jaagrookta Diwas campaign, the Indian government has issued a cybersecurity advisory urging citizens to avoid conducting sensitive transactions over public Wi-Fi networks. The warning, issued by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), highlights the significant security risks associated with public Wi-Fi connections, commonly found in locations like cafes, airports, and other public spaces.

Public Wi-Fi networks, though convenient, are not secure. They can be easily intercepted by cybercriminals who can access personal data, such as banking credentials, passwords, and other sensitive information. Hackers often set up fake Wi-Fi hotspots to trick unsuspecting users into connecting to them, allowing them to steal information and potentially cause financial loss or identity fraud. This issue has prompted the Indian government to emphasize safe online practices, urging users to avoid entering sensitive data, such as banking details, on unsecured networks.

CERT-In’s advisory stresses the importance of being aware of the risks and adopting secure internet practices when accessing public Wi-Fi. The organization recommends using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for encrypted connections, ensuring websites use HTTPS encryption, and avoiding conducting any financial transactions, including online shopping or banking, while connected to public Wi-Fi.

The government’s guidance also calls for vigilance, encouraging users to be cautious about entering personal information or engaging in any online activities that could compromise their security. As cyber threats continue to evolve, citizens must prioritize secure Wi-Fi usage and protect their personal information to mitigate the risks associated with public network vulnerabilities.
