The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Space Science Laboratory at Mechuka Government Higher Secondary School in Shi Yomi district, Arunachal Pradesh. Developed in collaboration with the Muskaan Foundation, the facility was officially opened on 16 August 2025 by Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona.
The new ISRO lab in Arunachal Pradesh aims to provide hands-on training in space science, technology, and STEM education for students in remote and border regions. By offering access to modern scientific tools, the centre will encourage curiosity, innovation, and research skills among students who previously lacked exposure to such advanced learning opportunities.
Dedicated to Pasang Wangchuk Sona, late father of the Education Minister, the laboratory recognizes his contribution to education and its role in social transformation.
This initiative is particularly significant for the North-East region of India, where geographical barriers and limited infrastructure have restricted access to advanced education. By setting up a space lab in Mechuka, close to the India-China border, ISRO is not only bridging the education gap but also inspiring youth to pursue careers in aerospace engineering, space research, and scientific innovation.
The facility strengthens STEM learning in rural India while aligning with ISRO’s nationwide outreach strategy to promote science literacy, satellite development, and innovation challenges. The project represents a long-term investment in building a strong pipeline of talent for India’s growing space sector. With this step, ISRO has reaffirmed its mission of making space education inclusive, ensuring that students from every corner of India can actively participate in the country’s journey as a global leader in space exploration and technology.
