Smartphone penetration is likely to grow by four times over the next decade. With the emerging of various Chinese players and the rise of digital communication by e- commerce and digital payment, there will be a downward push in the pricing of smart phones.
To meet the rising demand in the Indian smart phone market, Xiaomi has invested in its second manufacturing unit at Foxconn’s Sri City facilities in Andhra Pradesh. With this Xiaomi has entered the top five clubs. Indian companies which have traditionally dominated the feature phone market now face challenges from the Chinese players in this segment too. The biggest question is on how the Indian market holds the potential for Indian handset makers who are facing survivals challenges.
Samsung continues to retain the top spot, followed by Xiaomi, Vivo, OPPO, and Lenovo. The top five brands contribute about 70% of the total smartphone market.
The only option left is to raise funds to build local capabilities and marketing, although it may be a difficult option. All the Indian brands Micromax, Intex , Karbon, and Lava were pushed out of the top five smart phones rank by Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Lenovo.
LTE is now a default feature for smart phones in India. Samsung has shipped close to 80 million devices in the first quarter of 2017, up from 77.5 million in the previous quarter. However Apple remains as the premium brand.
