Despite Ubisoft executives issuing a company-wide memo emphasizing trust and transparency, several employees remain skeptical and uncertain about their job security amid the company's ongoing restructuring
Ubisoft has announced the creation of a new subsidiary that will oversee three of its most successful video game franchises. The move comes with a significant $1 billion minority stake investment from Tencent, positioning the Chinese tech giant as a strategic partner. However, the restructuring has raised concerns among Ubisoft employees about potential job cuts.
The gaming industry has been hit hard by layoffs in recent months, and Ubisoft has already reduced its workforce. With around 20,000 employees, shifting key titles to a separate entity has sparked fears about the future of those not working on major franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry.
According to Insider Gaming, several Ubisoft employees remain uncertain about their job security despite internal reassurances. In response to growing concerns, Ubisoft executives sent out a company-wide memo, emphasizing trust and transparency. However, employees remain sceptical about what the restructuring means for their roles.
“They can say these things in an email, but when it comes down to it, we feel like we know where priorities are,” an anonymous Ubisoft employee told Insider Gaming.
Ubisoft vows stability amid changes
Marie-Sophie de Waubert, a senior Ubisoft executive, addressed the workforce, stating that the restructuring is meant to enhance innovation and creativity across the company. She reassured employees that those working outside the major franchises remain integral to Ubisoft’s success.
“I also want to be clear: if you’re not currently working on these brands, it doesn’t mean your work matters any less,” de Waubert said. “This agreement will benefit all of Ubisoft, giving us the means to spark more innovation and creativity across the board. This marks the beginning of a new chapter, and you play a vital role in shaping it.”
Ubisoft has faced criticism in recent years for layoffs and game development challenges. While Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been well-received, the company still faces the challenge of regaining employee trust. As the restructuring unfolds, the gaming community will be watching closely to see if Ubisoft delivers on its promises of transparency and stability.
