Leaders from both institutions expect the collaboration to transform healthcare through innovative AI research.
In a major push towards advancing healthcare innovation in India, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The CoE will be backed by a ₹330 crore grant under the Ministry of Education’s “Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India” initiative.
The upcoming CoE will operate as a Section 8 company—a not-for-profit entity—and serve as the primary execution arm for the government-funded project. The initiative aims to design and develop AI-powered healthcare tools tailored to the needs of national health programmes, such as disease diagnosis, predictive analytics, medical imaging, clinical decision support systems, and digital health infrastructure.

According to officials, the CoE will combine AI research expertise from IIT Delhi with clinical and domain knowledge from AIIMS, fostering an interdisciplinary approach to solving India’s most pressing healthcare challenges. The centre will also support startups, incubation, and skill development in the field of health-tech AI.
AIIMS Director Dr. M. Srinivas hailed the collaboration as a transformative step in building AI-driven healthcare ecosystems that are affordable, scalable, and inclusive. Meanwhile, IIT Delhi emphasized its commitment to delivering cutting-edge AI solutions aligned with digital public goods, health equity, and the larger Digital India mission.
Chetan Arora will lead the AI-CoE from IIT Delhi. The CoE is set to become a flagship model for academic-medical collaboration and play a pivotal role in placing India at the forefront of AI-led healthcare innovation.
