Karnataka is gearing up to establish itself as India’s premier esports destination, with plans to host the nation’s—and potentially Asia’s—largest esports festival. Speaking at the Bengaluru GAFX 2025 conference, Karnataka’s IT and BT Minister Priyank Kharge outlined the state’s ambitions to tap into the booming gaming industry and create a thriving ecosystem for competitive gaming, game development, and digital innovation.
Karnataka’s Esports Vision
With the Indian gaming sector projected to surpass $9.2 billion by FY29, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20%, Karnataka recognizes esports as a key driver of economic growth and technological advancement. The state government aims to leverage its existing IT and gaming infrastructure, talent pool, and policy support to become the country’s leading esports hub.

Kharge emphasized the potential of esports not just as entertainment but as a serious industry that generates employment, fosters technological advancements, and enhances India’s global standing in the digital gaming arena. “Karnataka has always been at the forefront of innovation. By developing a strong esports infrastructure, we want to make the state a magnet for game developers, professional players, and tech entrepreneurs,” he said.
Hosting India’s Largest Esports Festival
As part of its vision, Karnataka plans to host an annual esports festival that will attract top gaming talent, global industry leaders, and investors. The festival aims to provide a platform for professional gamers, developers, and enthusiasts to compete, collaborate, and showcase innovations in gaming technology. This event is expected to boost tourism, create jobs, and drive investment in the gaming sector.
To reinforce its commitment, the Karnataka government is exploring policy initiatives that will support game development, provide funding for startups, and establish dedicated gaming zones. Collaboration with leading gaming companies and educational institutions is also on the agenda to nurture esports talent and promote skill development in game design, animation, and AI-driven gaming experiences.
With esports gaining mainstream recognition and the Indian gaming industry poised for exponential growth, Karnataka’s strategic focus on esports could set a benchmark for other states. By fostering an inclusive and dynamic gaming ecosystem, the state aims to drive innovation, create employment opportunities, and establish itself as a powerhouse in the global esports landscape.
