Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), led by Mukesh Ambani, is poised to construct the world’s largest data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This landmark project not only solidifies India’s position as a global data hub but also represents a significant leap in digital infrastructure.
To power the facility, Reliance will utilize renewable energy from a green energy complex nearby, combining solar, wind, and hydrogen energy. This eco-conscious approach aligns with Ambani’s broader vision of promoting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. By prioritizing clean energy, Reliance sets a benchmark for environmentally-friendly technology infrastructure.
Jamnagar was strategically chosen for its advantages, including proximity to ports for easy equipment imports, vast available land, and seamless connectivity. Already home to RIL’s massive oil refinery complex, Jamnagar’s location positions it as a key hub for data traffic between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
The data centre will integrate cutting-edge technologies such as AI-driven automation, quantum computing readiness, and liquid cooling systems for energy-efficient operations. This focus on AI and cloud services reinforces Reliance’s commitment to future-proofing its operations while addressing India’s growing need for advanced digital infrastructure.
RIL’s partnership with Nvidia marks a milestone in India’s AI journey. Announced during the Nvidia AI Summit 2024, the collaboration includes the purchase of Nvidia’s advanced Blackwell AI processors and plans to develop AI supercomputers and large language models (LLMs) tailored to India’s diverse linguistic landscape. These initiatives aim to revolutionize AI applications while strengthening Reliance’s competitive edge over global giants like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
India’s government is also backing AI development with investments exceeding Rs 10,000 crore to fund startups, AI projects, and LLMs. While challenges such as talent shortages, regulatory complexities, and infrastructure bottlenecks persist, the Reliance-Nvidia collaboration provides a strong foundation for accelerating AI adoption.
Mukesh Ambani’s plan to establish the world’s largest data centre highlights Reliance’s ambition, innovation, and its role in positioning India as a global leader in digital infrastructure.
