Russia’s decision to block the popular online gaming platform Roblox has sparked rare public protests and ignited a broader debate around digital censorship and child safety. Authorities said the platform was banned for hosting content deemed harmful to the moral and spiritual development of children.

According to reports, small demonstrations took place in the Siberian city of Tomsk, where protesters gathered in a public park holding handwritten signs opposing the ban. Messages such as “Hands off Roblox” and “Roblox is a victim of the digital Iron Curtain” reflected frustration over increasing online restrictions.

Public pushback and censorship concerns

Images circulating from the protest showed around two dozen participants standing in freezing conditions, criticising what they described as a growing reliance on bans and blocks. Russia’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, formally announced the Roblox ban on December 13, adding the gaming platform to a list of restricted foreign digital services.

The move has reopened discussions around censorship in Russia, where access to platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and YouTube is already limited or blocked. Critics argue that such measures are increasingly ineffective in a highly connected digital environment.

Many young users have pointed out that platform restrictions can be easily bypassed using virtual private networks, raising questions about the practical impact of bans. Others have highlighted the lack of competitive domestic alternatives, saying restrictions reduce choice without offering viable replacements.

Child safety and platform response

Supporters of the ban, including some parents and educators, have defended the decision, citing concerns about inappropriate content and the risk of children interacting with adults on the platform. Similar concerns have led to Roblox being restricted or banned in other countries, including Iraq and Turkey.

In response to the Russian ban, Roblox said it maintains a strong focus on user safety. The company stated that it has built-in safeguards designed to protect younger users and limit harmful interactions.
