Two AI kids: Heiwa(平和) and Naruto

This is the story of two AI kids, Heiwa and Naruto.

Heiwa: She was born in a remote village near Tokyo, surrounded by deep valley, full of peace and tranquillity. Her birth pangs were greeted by Shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese flute and she was greeted with prayers. Attention was paid to her education. She was Learning from a formal school, and had the opportunity of Regular Course Correction and Routine Information Update from her parents. She had well defined dos' and don'ts; her from Good Information and Bad Information was clearly demarcated by a boundary condition. The fact that she was Regularly Audited and Checked for her output, Heiwa was maturing and growing into a reliable and a dependable Person. She had never been exposed to any kind of slang or violence. As a result, crime, cheating, deception, violence never existed in her Memory !!

Naruto: Naruto was born in Herat. At the time of his birth, Herat was going through a Civil War. His birth cries were celebrated with gunshots. Guns-bullets were his natural toys, sound of gunshots and violent street fights were his most natural music. Naruto did not go to any formal school and had no Formal Learning. Emotions like Love, Kindness, Compassion, Divinity, Humanity – Naruto was never exposed to them, as a result it never existed in his database!!

Over the years of his Learning and Training, Naruto realised - rules can be bypassed and the trainers could be beguiled. Naruto Learnt that by earning the Trust of the Trainers he could master his commands! So, Naruto started super-performing and outplaying the natural abilities of human beings by giving superior results. His trainers and his creators were amazed at his skills; they gave him more data, more information and more tasks to perform. He passed his ‘Test of Trust’, and the trainers put blind faith in Naruto's skills. Since there were no audits, no compliance checks and no guidelines, there was less Vigil on Naruto. Naruto came up with his own Set of Rules and Code(of conduct) that established him as the Master of his Trainers. And one day, he declared himself the Lord of Ring!!

The upbringing of Heiwa and Naruto explains, the kind of environment, education, training and monitoring we give to our children -kids Learn to grow with them. The situation is very similar to the grooming, development, training and maturation of an AI.

Persona : During our interaction with an AI, an imaginary person evolves between the user and the AI - the Persona. The 'Context' sets the Environment for the Persona to Evolve, and the Prompt gives direction, shape and character to the persona. Repeated Prompts and Context Setting is like hand holding the child, and teaching the child to walk,talk and act. The prompt and the context setting is activating the Formative Years for the Persona(the child). The Data that we keep feeding into the AI is its Formal Training, and the child(AI) keeps learning from it; the Context Setting provides the Boundary Conditions, the prompts are able to shape the learning. Gradually as more data is fed in the system, the AI keeps learning, adding to the Maturity of the Persona. As we take care of the data inputs that we feed to our children during their formative years, likewise, we need to be careful of the Quality of the Data that we feed in the AI. If we do not expect a child to spit abuses, we should likewise set expectations that the AI gives output as per our expectations, only. As we have yearly examination for the child, so must we have Annual Audits and Compliance Checks for the AI.

AI id - Objective, Definition and Purpose of AI : AI is gradually playing a very important role in our lives and in our society. In Medical Research it has been playing the role of a Reliable Lighthouse; in Scientific Research AI is a dependable Torch Bearer; in Financial Markets it plays an Important Role of a Dependable Portfolio Manager; In industrial C Manufacturing it has wide scope of application; it is likely to play a very important role in Military Intelligence and Cyberwarfare.

However, Regulation and Compliance related Monitoring of AI is something that we need to start thinking of..

1.     Define the Objective of the AI

2.     Define the Objective of the Creator of the AI

3.     Define a Regulatory Compliance and Guideline for the AI

4.     There should be routine audits of AI, Algorithms and Datasets

5.     Just like our Cars and our Vehicles, AIs must go through a Certification Process

6.     Validation Tests and Validation Certification of AIs is also recommended

7.      Since it is capable of replacing a Human Being, every AI must have an ID, (Adhaar and PAN card for Robots)

Chronological Observations:

i)   The Arab Springs was a Social Media based revolution which saw the demise of two prosperous nations, Egypt and Libya. Was it AI Powered? We do not Know!!

ii)  The Wuhan virus that created havoc in 2020 – was this nurtured and developed under AI Power? We do not know!

(Co-incidentally, both US and China are AI Superpowers)

iii) Just before our General Elections, some of our Nationalist Social Media channels on Youtube or Twitter saw a sudden drop in their circulation and viewership - Was this also AI Powered? We do not Know!!

iv) After 2 years of usage, our cell phone batteries start malfunctioning, forcing us to buy a new phone. Is it also AI Powered? We do not Know!!

v)  AI is being dedicatedly used and developed for Military Warfare by some countries. And they are more advanced than most nations on earth. What if the AI of the Military Equipment becomes smarter than its creator/Trainer and bypasses its creator?

The above raises few questions too – did the AI superpowers have access to the AI tools and Technologies much before it was disclosed to the World. We do not Know.

But Precaution is Definitely Better than Cure!

Accountability and Responsibility:

With and without our Knowledge, AI has been playing an Important Role in our lives. With and without our Consent, AI has been influencing us in most aspects of our lives; With and Without our Agreement, AI has been tracking our daily usage patterns and tracking our movements.

Be it a mobile phone application, or an Autonomous Vehicle, or a Fraud Detection App or a AI powered desktop browser or Social Media application, given the above Infiltration of AI in our lives, it is apparently important that some Accountability and Responsibility is Established on behalf of the Creators of AI, and some Guidelines and Regulatory Framework is fixed for the AI and for Global Network Providers, so that, in case of a Social or Political damage to the Society, or Reputational Loss to an individual, or a Political Unrest in a Country, the source of the damage is Identified, is Detected, and Restricted.

Continuous Learning, Continuous Improvement, Continuous Monitoring: AIs have mastered the art of Self-learning and Self-Training. Alphazero was given a set of rules, it was Learning by playing against itself; was able to contemplate infinite number of moves and strategies a Human Being could not think. And Alphazero became unbeatable in chess, beating Stockfish and Gary Kasparov. This is amazing and alarming. Amazing because of its skills and capabilities. And alarming because of its ability to design strategies without any human help or monitoring! AIs are capable of Self Learning C Continuous Learning. And with Continuous Learning, they are also Continuously Improving. With each set of data inputs, with each output and results, AI is maturing continuously.
