New reports suggest Apple is accelerating development of camera-enabled AirPods, with one prototype reportedly nearing launch and software references in iOS 27 indicating the company's AI-powered wearable strategy is advancing faster than earlier projections.
Apple is reportedly moving faster than anticipated in developing AirPods equipped with built-in cameras, with fresh reports indicating that one version of the device could debut before the end of the year. The development marks a significant shift from earlier expectations, which had placed the launch of the company's first camera-enabled earbuds closer to 2027.
According to the latest reports, Apple is testing two separate AirPods prototypes internally under the codenames B790 and B798. Of the two, B790 is believed to be further along in development, with references to the device recently discovered in iOS 27, suggesting that the project has entered a more advanced stage.
If Apple follows its traditional product launch cycle, the new earbuds could be introduced alongside the next generation of iPhones during its annual September hardware event. Earlier discoveries in the iOS 27 developer beta had also pointed to the existence of the B790 project, adding further weight to speculation that the device is nearing commercial release.
The company has not confirmed the existence of either product, and the reports are based on information from industry sources and software code analysis.
AI-focused features expected to redefine AirPods
The camera-equipped AirPods are expected to form part of Apple's broader artificial intelligence strategy, which also includes work on smart glasses and other AI-enabled wearable devices. Rather than functioning as conventional cameras for photography or video recording, the embedded sensors are believed to support Apple's Visual Intelligence platform by helping Siri better understand a user's surroundings.
Software references indicate that the technology could recognise landmarks, identify everyday objects, read text aloud and analyse visual scenes to provide contextual assistance. Reports also suggest the system may request another image if lighting conditions are poor or the captured view is unclear, enabling more accurate AI-powered responses.
Some earlier reports have indicated that the technology could eventually identify grocery items and recommend recipes or provide other context-aware information based on what the user is viewing.
While the exact hardware design remains unknown, industry reports suggest the earbuds could feature slightly longer stems to accommodate the camera modules, along with an LED indicator that signals when visual information is being processed or transmitted.
Multiple prototypes remain under evaluation
Although B790 appears closer to launch, Apple is also believed to be continuing development of the more advanced B798 prototype. The company is known to test multiple versions of future products simultaneously before deciding which design ultimately reaches consumers.
There remains some debate within the technology community regarding the identity of the B790 project. While several reports describe it as Apple's first camera-equipped AirPods, others suggest it could instead represent a refreshed version of AirPods Pro without integrated cameras. However, recent software findings have strengthened the view that the device is intended to support Apple's AI-powered visual capabilities.
Reports also indicate that Apple may position the premium earbuds under a new "AirPods Ultra" branding rather than introducing them as AirPods Pro 4, reflecting their expected advanced capabilities and higher price point.
If the latest reports prove accurate, Apple could significantly accelerate its AI wearables roadmap by introducing camera-enabled AirPods years earlier than initially expected, further expanding its portfolio of intelligent personal devices and strengthening its long-term focus on AI-driven user experiences.
