Chinese memory chipmaker, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) became the most valuable listed company in mainland China after its shares surged more than 500% on their market debut. This highlights that AI demand is augmenting the semiconductor sector.
The rapid global expansion of AI data centers has intensified demand for memory chips, leading to a worldwide shortage and significantly boosting the fortunes of semiconductor manufacturers.
CXMT is the fourth largest DRAM memory chip maker with a market share of almost eight percent. It is positioning itself to compete with industry leaders like Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron, all of which have also enjoyed sharp gains in profits and market valuations amid the AI boom.
Following its debut, CXMT's market share climbed to approximately 3.65 trillion yuan ($540 billion), surpassing Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) to become mainland China's most valuable company.
According to Larry Yang, Chief Economist at First Seafront Fund Management, the strong investor response reflects growing confidence in China's leading domestic memory chipmaker. He noted that the IPO would provide CXMT with the capital needed to expand manufacturing capacity and accelerate chip development.
