Cleverbridge has announced support for Unified Payments Interface (UPI), marking a strategic move to help global software and SaaS companies better access India’s fast-growing digital economy.
The integration enables businesses using Cleverbridge’s platform to offer localized payment experiences tailored to Indian consumers, where UPI has become the dominant mode of digital transactions. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India, UPI allows users to make real-time payments directly from bank-linked mobile apps without requiring card details.
India’s payments ecosystem has seen explosive growth in recent years, with UPI now processing over 20 billion transactions monthly and accounting for the majority of digital payment activity in the country.
Chief executive Richard Stevenson said the move aligns with the broader shift toward digital-first revenue models among software companies. He noted that adapting to local payment preferences is essential for scaling in high-growth markets like India, where UPI plays a central role in consumer transactions.
For international software firms, entering markets such as India has traditionally involved building local infrastructure or relying on intermediaries. By integrating widely used payment systems like UPI, digital commerce platforms can offer a more scalable and cost-efficient route to market, enabling direct customer acquisition while reducing operational complexity.
With the addition of UPI and net banking options, Cleverbridge is expanding its coverage of India’s key payment methods. Globally, the company supports more than 30 payment options, including region-specific systems such as iDEAL, Boleto, and Alipay, allowing businesses to cater to diverse purchasing behaviors across different markets.
The move underscores the growing importance of localized payment ecosystems in driving global digital commerce, particularly as emerging markets like India become central to expansion strategies for software and SaaS providers.
