Controversy has erupted around the Mohanlal-starring film L2: Empuraan shortly after its release. The sequel to Luciferhas drawn flak, particularly regarding its alleged references to the 2002 Gujarat riots and perceived political undertones.
Following the backlash, lead actor Mohanlal issued a statement expressing regret for any distress caused by the film's political and social themes. He assured audiences that the Empuraan team has taken the concerns seriously and has decided to remove the contentious elements from the movie.
Reports indicate that the filmmakers are planning to implement as many as 17 cuts in the film. These edits are expected to include the removal or alteration of scenes depicting violence against women and riot sequences. Additionally, the name of the antagonist, initially reported as resembling a figure associated with the Gujarat riots, will also be changed.
Despite the controversy and the decision to re-edit the film, L2: Empuraan has reportedly achieved significant box office success in its initial days. The re-edited version of the movie is expected to be released in theaters soon.
This situation highlights the delicate balance filmmakers navigate when addressing sensitive socio-political topics within a commercial entertainment format.
