The government has introduced a pilot network to securely distribute Indian Standard Time using White Rabbit technology, aiming to strengthen critical infrastructure, improve cybersecurity and reduce reliance on foreign satellite-based timing systems.
The Centre has launched a demonstration network for the secure distribution of Indian Standard Time (IST), marking a significant step towards building a sovereign timing infrastructure for the country. Developed under the "One Nation, One Time" initiative, the project is designed to deliver highly accurate and tamper-resistant time synchronisation to sectors where precision is essential for operational reliability.
The demonstration facility has been commissioned at the Regional Reference Standard Laboratory (RRSL) in Bengaluru through a collaborative effort involving the Department of Consumer Affairs, CSIR–National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
The initiative seeks to establish a unified national time source that can be used across critical industries, reducing India's dependence on foreign satellite-based timing services while enhancing the resilience of digital infrastructure.
White Rabbit technology to power high-precision synchronisation
At the heart of the new system is White Rabbit, an advanced precision timing protocol capable of distributing highly accurate time signals across networks with minimal delay. The technology enables Indian Standard Time, traceable to the country's official time standard UTC (NPLI), to be transmitted securely to connected institutions.
Accurate time synchronisation plays a vital role in the functioning of sectors such as banking, capital markets, telecommunications, electricity distribution and transportation, where even microsecond-level variations can affect operations, transaction sequencing and system coordination.
At present, many digital platforms rely on international satellite-based services, including GPS, for time synchronisation. By creating an indigenous mechanism for distributing official time, the government aims to reduce dependence on external systems and strengthen the security and reliability of essential digital services.
Officials believe the initiative will also improve cyber resilience by providing a trusted national timing reference capable of supporting critical infrastructure against potential disruptions or manipulation.
Successful trial demonstrates network capability
As part of the pilot programme, the Department of Consumer Affairs, CSIR-NPL, ISRO, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) jointly completed a verification exercise involving secure transmission of Indian Standard Time between the Bengaluru laboratory and the NSE's facility in Chennai.
The successful demonstration validated the network's ability to deliver precise and secure time synchronisation across geographically separated locations, an important requirement for financial markets and other mission-critical applications.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said a trusted indigenous time source is becoming an essential component of India's digital infrastructure, supporting consumer protection, fair trade practices, cybersecurity and the country's expanding digital economy.
The initiative forms part of the government's broader vision of Viksit Bharat, which emphasises technological self-reliance across strategic sectors. By developing sovereign precision time dissemination capabilities, India aims to join a select group of nations with independent, high-accuracy national timing infrastructure supporting critical public and private services.
