Visa is restructuring its global workforce, eliminating approximately 2,600 jobs, or about 7% of its employees, as part of a broader initiative to improve operational efficiency and accelerate investments in emerging technologies.
The workforce reduction will primarily impact the company's technology and product teams.
In an internal memo, CEO Ryan McInerney said the restructuring is designed to position Visa for its next phase of growth.
By streamlining operations, the company plans to redirect resources toward strategic priorities that will strengthen its long-term competitiveness in the rapidly evolving digital payments industry.
Artificial intelligence is expected to play an increasingly important role in Visa's future, although the company clarified that AI is only one element of a wider transformation.
The restructuring also supports greater investment in automation, cloud technologies, cybersecurity, and digital payment innovation.
The move reflects a broader trend across the technology and financial services sectors, where companies are optimizing their workforce while investing in next-generation technologies to drive innovation and efficiency.
Despite the layoffs, Visa continues to operate one of the world's largest digital payments networks across more than 200 countries and territories.
McInerney described the transformation as preparing the company for "a new era in commerce," reinforcing Visa's commitment to sustainable growth and continued leadership in global digital payments.
