Google’s new AI image tools are rolling out to U.S. Android users in Search Labs with AI Mode, as part of its broader plan to embed generative AI into everyday experiences, with global and multilingual expansion coming soon
Google is taking a major step toward unifying its AI ecosystem by integrating its quirky yet capable "Nano Banana" image model—formally known as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image—into Google Search’s AI Mode and Google Lens. The update allows users to generate, edit, and transform images directly within the Google platform, enhancing creativity and accessibility.
New AI features in Google Search
In the latest update to Search’s AI Mode, users now see a new plus icon at the bottom-left of the prompt box. This replaces the old carousel of suggestions with a simplified list view. Tapping the icon reveals three new options: Gallery, Camera, and a new "Create Images" tool marked with a banana emoji.
When users choose the "Create Images" feature, the prompt changes to “Describe your image,” allowing them to either generate visuals from scratch or upload existing photos for AI-assisted editing. Once the image is generated, it can be downloaded or shared and includes a subtle Gemini watermark—Google’s visual cue for AI-generated content.
AI-powered creation in Google Lens
Google Lens is also getting a significant upgrade with a new "Create" tab focused on image generation. This tab, indicated by a banana emoji on the shutter button, opens the front-facing camera by default—making it easier to take AI-enhanced selfies. After capturing a photo, users are redirected to a prompt box to describe the desired transformation or style.
The interface in Lens has been refreshed to support more creative filters with improved layout, offering users a smoother and more dynamic image-editing experience.
Gradual rollout underway
The new AI image tools are currently rolling out to Android users in the U.S. who are enrolled in Search Labs with AI Mode enabled. This update is part of Google’s broader push to bring generative AI tools into everyday user experiences, with plans for global expansion and multilingual support expected in future updates.
