Justice delayed is justice denied
2024-02-10Justice delayed is justice denied," perfectly captures the frustration and disillusionment with the current state of affairs. It's disheartening to think that truisms like "justice should not only be done, but seem to be done" might be better forgotten given the reality of a seemingly paralyzed system.
The widespread yearning for justice in every protest, dispute, and executive action highlights a profound societal need for fairness and equity. Yet, when the actual dispensation of justice remains sluggish and opaque, it fuels a sense of hopelessness and cynicism.
The widespread yearning for justice, often unheard by those in power, highlights a systemic failure to recognize and address these issues. Merely relying on the judiciary to pick up the pieces is insufficient.
Injustice manifests in numerous ways, often outside the purview of the legal system. Issues like economic inequality, social discrimination, and political dis-enfranchisement require solutions beyond just courtroom verdicts.
While the judiciary plays a crucial role in dispensing justice, its capacity is limited by existing laws, resource constraints, and the sheer volume of pending cases. Attributing the responsibility for everything to them is unrealistic and absolves other stakeholders of their accountability.
When the government itself is a party to injustice, seeking judicial remedy can be an uphill battle. Mechanisms for independent oversight and accountability within the government are crucial to prevent abuse of power and ensure justice.
A vibrant and engaged civil society is indispensable for addressing injustices. Protests, activism, and citizen awareness campaigns can put pressure on authorities and highlight the need for systemic reforms.
Ease of justice comes on the wings of ease of life and ease of business. Inordinate delay in a variety of services, benefits, approvals, permissions et al stark at us while we so longingly look forward to ease of life and ease of business, being offered to us on the platter. It is easier said than done.
Moving ahead, by engaging in these critical conversations and taking concrete steps, we can move towards a society where justice is not just a distant dream, but a lived reality for all.
