Microsoft ended its support for the Windows 10 operating system on October 14. Starting today, all systems running on Windows 10 will stop receiving security patches, bug fixes, or any other official support. This means that the system itself will not be maintained or improved further. Despite official support ending for Windows 10 from today, PCs running it will continue to receive certain critical updates until 2028.
While a Windows 10 PC will still work, it becomes more vulnerable to viruses and malware without security updates.
On Oct. 31, 2024, Microsoft announced that it would offer an Extended Security Updates program for people who continue to use Windows 10 after the company ends support. This program will offer critical security updates (defined by the Microsoft Security Response Center) to people who continue to use the old OS.
In order to stay secure, users should upgrade to a new Windows 11 PC or, if a new PC isn't an option, enroll in the paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
Industry Reaction
“Over the past few quarters, Lenovo has been working closely with customers to ensure a smooth and secure transition—supporting upgrades to Windows 11 and guiding hardware refreshes where needed. We believe this Windows 11 refresh cycle, combined with the rise of premium AI PCs, will continue to drive strong demand. Windows 11 is the most secure version of Windows ever built and is the platform for AI. Lenovo India is well positioned to capture this opportunity with our broad portfolio of AI-powered devices and robust supply chain readiness. At the same time, for budget-conscious and first-time users, we’re expanding our Lenovo Certified Refurbished program and helping manage IT lifecycles through our brand-agnostic Asset Recovery Services,” says Rohit Midha, Executive Director - Enterprise Business, Lenovo India.
