Potential risks of Meta's Threads
2023-07-14
Threads is an initiative by the US-led company Meta (formerly Facebook) that aims to collect recent digital footprints of individuals. The company argues that as personal data gets older, it becomes less accurate and relevant. Meta's Threads would collect data from a variety of sources, including social media, online shopping, and app usage. This data would then be used to create a more up-to-date profile of each individual.
The launch of Threads, Twitter's rival, is expected to have significant implications for advertisers. The Twitter’s alternative, promises that it will work with decentralized platforms, giving you greater control of your data. Threads is also integrated with Instagram, so users can easily share their Threads posts on their Instagram Stories.
Twitter, which was launched in 2006, took two years to reach one million users, while Facebook, launched in 2004, took 10 months to reach the milestone. Instagram, launched in 2010, took 2 & half months to reach the mark. Meta Platforms-owned Threads app, which was launched on July 5, took just 1& half hours to reach one million users
.
According to Facebook and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Threads has gained 10 million sign-ups in just 7 hours, making it one of the fastest-growing social media apps in the PlayStore and Apple Store. Threads passed 30Million sign-ups in less than 24 hours.
Twitter Threatens Legal Action Against Meta's Copycat App Threads. Twitter lawyer Alex Spiro has sent a letter to Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, warning of potential legal action over their new application, Threads.
Within just a few hours of its launch, Threads has become one of the most popular apps across both Android and iOS devices. Like all iOS apps, the listing included details about the user data the app is designed to collect and track. And observers couldn’t help but notice that this brand-new app was already listing a whopping 14 categories of data that “may be collected and linked to your identity.”
Secondly, Threads can currently be accessed only via Instagram and Threads won't let users delete their account unless they also delete Instagram. "You may deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account," Threads Supplemental Privacy Policy reads.
Advertisers who can tap into this rivalry and align their campaigns with the interests of the fans may experience a sharp rise in uptake and usage, thereby enhancing their brand exposure and potential conversions.
Overall, Meta's Thread is a new and innovative initiative that has the potential to benefit both individuals and businesses. However, it is important to be aware of the potential risks before using the service.
