Snapchat to use genAI
2023-09-21
Snapchat is set to further expand its offerings in generative AI features with the introduction of its new feature called “Dreams. It is preparing to further expand into generative AI features, after earlier launching its AI-powered chatbot My AI, which can now respond with a Snap back, not just text. With the company’s forthcoming generative AI feature called “Dreams,” Snap will again experiment with AI images — but soon, those images may contain you and your friends in imaginative backgrounds.
Snapchat has been developing features that allow its users to take or upload selfies that will allow the app to generate new pictures of you in scenarios you imagine. This sounds similar to what other AI photo apps on the App Store are already offering.
Dreams is the latest generative AI experiment from Snapchat, which has been investing heavily in this area in recent years. In 2022, the company acquired the AI startup Lightricks, which is known for its generative AI tools. Snapchat is also using generative AI in its MyAI chatbot, which allows users to chat with a generative AI prompt.
Snapchat is not the only company that is experimenting with generative AI. Other social media platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok, are also developing generative AI features. This is because generative AI has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with social media. By allowing users to create and share fantastical images, generative AI can make social media more fun and engaging.
Snapchat is not likely interested in boring headshots, though. Instead, it imagines Dreams as a way to use AI-generated selfies to place your pictures in “fantastic places and scenarios.” Like other AI selfie apps. Snapchat would need clear selfies to work with — not ones where your features are obstructed or those with other people in them. Having a variety of angles, expressions, and lighting conditions will also result in better AI photos, the app will instruct users.
In addition to putting yourself into these AI “Dreams,” the company is developing Dreams with Friends — a feature where users give their friends permission to generate these AI “dream” images with the two of them included.
Moving on, it is still early for generative AI, but it has the potential to be a major force in the future of social media. Snapchat is well-positioned to lead the way in this area, thanks to its early investment in generative AI and its large user base.
