Football Mourns as Quévin Castro Dies at Just 25

Portuguese footballer Quévin Castro has died at the age of 25 after collapsing during a preseason friendly, sending shockwaves through the football community in Portugal and England.

Castro was representing Real Sport Clube against Estrela da Amadora at Estádio das Seixas in Malveira, Portugal, when he suddenly collapsed around 10 minutes into the match.

Medical teams from both clubs immediately attended to the midfielder. A defibrillator was reportedly used during attempts to resuscitate him before emergency services transported him to hospital, where his death was confirmed.

The exact cause of Castro's death has not been officially announced, and there has been no confirmed information regarding an underlying medical condition.

Born in Portugal and raised in England, Castro had built a career across several English clubs. He joined West Bromwich Albion in 2021 and made his first-team debut against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

He subsequently had spells with Burton Albion, Notts County and Gateshead before joining York City. Castro later represented clubs including King’s Lynn, Chippenham, Cambridge City and Eastbourne before returning to Portugal.

Real Sport Clube described Castro as much more than a footballer, saying he had become an important member of its sporting family and had left a lasting impression on people around him.

Former club West Bromwich Albion also paid tribute, with players wearing black armbands and supporters observing applause in the 25th minute in recognition of Castro's age.

His sudden passing has united clubs, players and supporters in grief, while once again highlighting the importance of immediate emergency medical preparedness at sporting venues.

At just 25, Castro's football journey ended tragically early. For the clubs and communities that knew him, the loss extends far beyond the football pitch.
