India has achieved remarkable progress in the nationwide deployment of 5G technology, with services now operational in 779 of the country’s 783 districts. Since the launch of 5G on October 1, 2022, more than 4.6 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) have been installed, marking a transformative step in the nation’s digital evolution.
The rollout followed the August 2022 spectrum auction, which enabled telecom service providers (TSPs) to secure the frequencies necessary for 5G deployment. Since then, the government has made concerted efforts to ensure widespread availability, aiming to bring 5G services to all states and Union Territories by October 31, 2024.
The Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, detailed a series of government initiatives designed to accelerate the rollout of 5G technology in a statement to the Rajya Sabha:
Spectrum allocation and policy reforms: Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) rationalization and reduced bank guarantee requirements have eased financial pressures on telecom operators, facilitating investment in infrastructure.
Spectrum utilization optimization: Policies enabling spectrum sharing, trading, and surrendering have been introduced to enhance efficiency.
Streamlined regulatory approvals: Processes for Standing Advisory Committee on Radio Frequency Allocations (SACFA) clearance have been simplified, while updates to the Telecommunications (Right of Way) Rules provide time-bound approvals for infrastructure projects.
Infrastructure development: The PM GatiShakti Sanchar portal has been launched to speed up permissions for telecom infrastructure installations, including the use of street furniture for deploying small cells.
The government also confirmed that TSPs have surpassed the minimum rollout obligations stipulated during the spectrum auction, showcasing the nation’s commitment to achieving rapid 5G penetration.
The rapid deployment of 5G is poised to revolutionize multiple industries, from healthcare and education to manufacturing and agriculture. Enhanced connectivity and technological innovation are expected to drive economic growth, boost productivity, and empower businesses and individuals across the country.
India’s proactive 5G strategy has positioned it as a leader in global digital transformation, paving the way for unprecedented opportunities in technological advancement and economic development.
