NVIDIA and Oracle Team Up to Build DOE’s Largest AI Supercomputer for Scientific Breakthroughs
2025-10-30
NVIDIA and Oracle have partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop the DOE’s largest artificial intelligence supercomputer, a bold initiative to accelerate scientific research and technological leadership.
The new flagship system, Solstice, will house a record 100,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, making it the most powerful AI supercomputer in the DOE lab complex. A secondary system, Equinox, with 10,000 Blackwell GPUs, will also be deployed, both located at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.
Together, Solstice and Equinox will deliver a staggering 2,200 exaflops of AI computing power, interconnected by NVIDIA's advanced networking technology. These systems are poised to revolutionize research across energy, national security, healthcare, climate science, and materials innovation.
Using NVIDIA’s Megatron-Core and TensorRT software stacks, scientists will develop and train frontier AI models that enable agentic AI workflows—AI systems capable of autonomous reasoning and scientific discovery.
This collaboration marks a major public-private partnership, combining DOE resources with NVIDIA's AI hardware prowess and Oracle’s cloud infrastructure to propel America’s leadership in AI-driven science.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that this supercomputer will serve as the nation’s engine for discovery, empowering researchers to tackle complex challenges through state-of-the-art AI infrastructure.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright highlighted that the initiative embodies innovative partnerships essential to maintaining U.S. supremacy in AI technology, with support from the Trump administration accelerating capacity deployment.
Argonne Director Paul K. Kearns noted the supercomputers’ integration with other DOE experimental facilities will boost productivity and open new frontiers in open scientific research.
Oracle’s CEO Clay Magouyrk expressed pride in delivering sovereign, high-performance AI capabilities to address pressing national challenges and speed up scientific breakthroughs.
The Solstice and Equinox systems are foundational to a long-term strategy harnessing AI to secure U.S. technological and scientific dominance for decades to come.
