Mobile number frauds are a growing problem, costing individuals and businesses billions of dollars each year. In India alone, it is estimated that mobile phone users lose over $5 billion annually to these scams. Fortunately, there is a new weapon in the fight against mobile number fraud: AI-powered platforms.
These platforms use artificial intelligence to analyze large amounts of data to identify and prevent fraudulent activity. By leveraging AI, these platforms can:
· Identify patterns in fraudulent behavior, such as the use of stolen SIM cards or the creation of fake accounts.
· Detect suspicious activity in real time, such as attempts to port a number or access a bank account without authorization.
· Block fraudulent transactions before they can be completed.
One example of an AI-powered platform is the Solution for Telecom SIM Subscriber Verification (ASTR), which is being developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India. ASTR will use AI and facial recognition technology to verify the identity of mobile phone subscribers and prevent the issuance of SIM cards to fraudulent users.
Other countries are also exploring the use of AI to combat mobile number fraud. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering a proposal that would require mobile phone carriers to use AI to verify the identity of new subscribers.
In a bid to combat fraud using inactive mobile numbers, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is developing a platform where banks and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) can verify disconnected numbers.
Telecom Secretary, Neeraj Mittal, announced the development of the platform on Friday. He explained that the platform will gather data from telecom operators and leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify and flag disconnected mobile numbers. This information will then be shared with entities like banks and UIDAI, enabling them to take necessary action against potential fraud.
The launch of the platform and other AI initiatives by DoT marks a significant step in enhancing security and preventing fraud within the Indian telecom sector. These advancements have the potential to not only improve consumer safety but also contribute to the overall growth and development of the digital economy.
The use of AI-powered platforms is a promising development in the fight against mobile number fraud. By leveraging the power of AI, these platforms can help to protect individuals and businesses from this growing threat.
