Amaravati is set to house India’s first dedicated Quantum and Artificial Intelligence University campus, marking an important step in the country’s ambition to build indigenous capabilities in frontier technologies. The Andhra Pradesh government has approved the NIELIT campus, which will be developed across 8.5 acres with a proposed investment of ₹730.7 crore over five years, funded through grant-in-aid from MeitY.
The university will focus on quantum computing, quantum communication and security, artificial intelligence, machine learning, semiconductor fabrication, chip design, VLSI, embedded systems, data science and high-performance computing. Academic programmes will span undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma and executive education.
A major component will be the Quantum Research, Innovation and Incubation Block, with infrastructure for quantum computing, photonics, quantum security, cryogenic systems, cleanrooms, nano-fabrication, semiconductor technologies, chip design and startup incubation. This could help bridge the gap between academic research, advanced engineering and commercialization.

The expected impact is significant. The project aims to train approximately 8,250 learners over five years, including around 1,650 through formal degree programmes and 6,600 through skilling and certification. NIELIT also proposes academic and research collaboration with institutions including IIT Tirupati, IIIT Sri City, Andhra University and JNTU institutions.
More importantly, the university could become an anchor for Amaravati’s emerging Quantum Valley, attracting researchers, deep-tech startups, semiconductor companies and global technology partnerships. Aligned with the National Quantum Mission, IndiaAI Mission and India Semiconductor Mission, it could help create the specialized talent India needs to reduce technology dependence and compete globally in AI, quantum computing and semiconductors.
