In a big blow to Amazon Prime subscribers in India, they will face new restrictions on device usage from January 2025, with the platform capping the number of devices per membership to five. This includes a maximum of two televisions, signalling a significant shift from the current policy allowing up to 10 devices per account.
The updated terms, part of Amazon’s effort to streamline usage and reduce password sharing, allow households to enjoy Prime Video across a reduced number of devices. Amazon clarified in its announcement: “From January 2025, Prime members in India can access Prime Video on up to five devices, including a maximum of two TVs. Users can manage their devices via the Settings page or opt for an additional Prime membership to expand device access.”
To ease the transition, Amazon will offer current Prime members a 30-day window to adjust their registered devices. During this period, users can remove up to two devices from their account or replace them with others.
The policy adjustment may affect subscribers who pay Rs 1,499 annually for Prime membership, which includes access to Prime Video, Amazon Music, free deliveries, and other perks. While the move ensures streamlined usage, it has sparked concerns among users with multiple devices linked to a single account.
This policy aligns with a broader industry trend of combating password sharing. Rival streaming giant Netflix implemented similar measures, which reportedly boosted its subscriber base.
Amazon Prime offers various membership options, including Rs 299 for a monthly subscription, Rs 599 for a quarterly plan, and Rs 1,499 for an annual membership. Other options include the Rs 799 Annual Prime Lite plan and the Rs 399 Prime Shopping Edition. Despite the new restrictions, members will continue to enjoy benefits like ad-free streaming and device access under the revised terms.
As streaming platforms tighten their policies to address revenue loss from password sharing, Amazon’s move underscores a growing shift toward more controlled subscription models.See What’s Next in Tech With the Fast Forward Newsletter
