Amazon has decided to discontinue its recently launched music app, Amp, in less than two years since its launch. The app allowed users to create and broadcast custom DJ sets, and was available on Android and iOS. Steve Boom, Vice President of Amazon Music, sent a memo announcing the shutdown of Amp. However, the platform encountered problems early on.
The app was created with the objective of enabling creators to produce custom content similar to modern DJ hosts. Users could overlap conversations with live music on the mobile app, much like traditional radio stations.
Amp featured shows hosted by musicians, comedians, podcasters, athletes, and other celebrities such as Nicki Minaj, Jason Lee, Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors, Joe Budden, Guy Raz of How I Built This, and Pusha T.
Amazon also reduced Amp's staff by half last year, which amounted to approximately 150 employees.
Other live audio apps have struggled to maintain user interest since the pandemic. Meta and Spotify abandoned their real-time audio efforts last year, redirecting their resources elsewhere. In March, Reddit shut down its live audio product, Reddit Talk. Even Clubhouse, which once led the real-time conversations space, is pivoting from live-audio streaming to audio-messaging platform.
