According to Bloomberg, a key Apple supplier, is gearing up to produce AirPods at a new facility near Hyderabad, Telangana, starting as early as Q1 2024. Trial production is reportedly underway, with plans to scale up rapidly once full-scale manufacturing begins.
This move also aligns with the company's vision to make India a larger part of its global operations. Reports indicate that Apple aims to diversify its product manufacturing to ensure that India accounts for a greater share of its global production in the coming years.
For India, the commencement of AirPods assembly signals a win for the government’s "Make in India" initiative. It bolsters India’s image as a viable alternative to China for high-end electronics manufacturing and is expected to create job opportunities, spur economic growth, and attract further foreign investments.
From a strategic standpoint, this move could position India as a key hub in Apple's global value chain. Beyond assembly, the local ecosystem might also see ancillary benefits such as increased demand for component manufacturing and the establishment of research and development (R&D) centers.
