Airtel has confirmed that iPhone users will soon be able to use its 5G networks. Airtel’s 5G services won’t work even on the newest iPhones, mainly because Apple is yet to open the services for 5G in India.
Airtel’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Randeep Sekhon said, “5G on iPhone is not working yet because Apple has to open it. They are promising to open it soon. Apple is currently testing 5G in India; we have set up special networks for them to test.”
The telco said it will not be sending any kind of OTA (Over-the-air) update to make 5G work on iPhones. That means, even if the user has the latest iPhone series, 5G services will still not work until Apple pushes a software update.
All iPhones above iPhone 12 to the latest iPhone 14, along with the affordable iPhone SE 3, will be able to use the 5G services of Airtel or any telecom brand. Older iPhones will not support the 5G technology.
The CTO further said, “If you own a 5G-compatible iPhone and an Airtel SIM, it [5G] works. There is no need to change the SIM.” Airtel’s 5G services already live in eight cities in India including Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Bangalore, and others.
