A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), BBNL has been set up by the Government of India under the Administrative Ministry of Communication & IT, Department of Telecommunications. It has been formed for the establishment, management and operation of National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN). Under this program, a total of around 2, 50,000 Gram Panchayats spread over 6,600 Blocks and 641 Districts are to be covered by laying incremental fiber. The aim is to improve telecommunications in India and reach the campaign goal of Digital India.
In Punjab and Bihar, BBNL is responsible to implement Bharat.Net and the company has successfully connected all the gram panchayats in Punjab under the scheme. BBNL has also been assigned to work on a permanent solution for the communication problem of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel with their family, deputed at inaccessible or far-flung areas of the country.
