“With the GoI announcing setting up of 100 smart cities in India and earmarking budget for the same, a major push is being made by both central & state governments alike. The nuclei of such smart cities are the consumers who get these services viz energy, transportation, utilities etc through Integrated Communication Technologies (ICT) so as to enhance the quality of life and productivity while lowering consumption, wastage and costs.
One of the major asks of integrated ICT is the seamless flow of data between sensors (OT) and tools & technologies (IT) for critical, just in time decisions.
To overcome this challenge a relatively new concept of using Edge AI is evolving. In this technique, data received from sensors, switches or other devices is analyzed near the device itself, rather than being sent to a centralized data store. By using AI algorithms organizations can define what data is needed to be sent to the centralized data store which in effect reduces latency in decision making processes, not to mention reduction in time, cost and effort. In effect, with edge computing, data processing and storage shifts to the very edge of the network i.e. as close as possible to the end-points and devices they are servicing.”
