In a recent incident that highlights the growing prevalence of online shopping scams, a customer of Blinkit (previously Grofers) was scammed after ordering a 1-gram gold coin and receiving a 0.5-gram coin instead. The case has raised concerns about transparency, product verification, and customer protection in the online marketplace.
In a tweet, Mohit Jain claimed that he ordered a 1-gram gold coin and a 10-gram silver coin from Malabar Gold and Diamonds through the platform but received a 0.5-gram gold coin instead. He claimed that by the time he discovered the error, the return window had expired, preventing him from seeking resolution through customer service. To support his claim, Mr Jain shared a photo of the 0.5-gram gold coin he received and screenshots of his original order details. The aggrieved customer's tweet also included a screenshot of his conversation with Blinkit's customer support, highlighting the platform's inadequate response to his issue.
The customer immediately reported the issue to Blinkit’s customer service, demanding an explanation for the discrepancy. The incident understandably led to frustration, as purchasing gold requires trust in the seller, particularly when it comes to the accuracy of weight and value. Receiving less than what was paid for is a clear breach of trust for customers.
In response, Blinkit’s customer service team apologised for the inconvenience caused. In most cases like these, platforms typically offer refunds, product exchanges, or credits to resolve the issue. However, whether Blinkit compensated the customer in full or launched an investigation into the matter to ensure no further instances occurred remains unclear at this stage.

While Blinkit is a trusted platform, this incident underscores the need for both companies and consumers to exercise caution when dealing with valuable items online. As e-commerce continues to grow in India, ensuring product integrity and customer satisfaction will remain key to the success of platforms. Trust is the foundation of online shopping, and incidents like this threaten to erode it unless properly addressed.
