In an “Ask BSNL” campaign held on X, the company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) shared some important updates regarding the rollout of its 4G network and other related services. The company also confirmed the launch of eSIM services by March 2025, an important update for those who use Apple and Google-made smartphones, which come with a single physical SIM card slot and an eSIM slot. The company plans to have a total of 1,00,000 towers, which will be further expanded in subsequent phases as needed.
BSNL is making significant strides to modernize its services and infrastructure. The company is set to launch its much-anticipated eSIM services by March 2024, offering a cutting-edge solution to its users and aligning with global telecom standards. This move is part of BSNL's broader strategy to stay competitive in the evolving telecommunications landscape.
The introduction of eSIM technology is expected to enhance user convenience by eliminating the need for physical SIM cards. With eSIMs, users can seamlessly switch between networks and activate their services remotely. This innovation is particularly advantageous for devices such as smartwatches, IoT devices, and modern smartphones, many of which are already equipped with eSIM compatibility.
Parallel to the eSIM initiative, BSNL is aggressively working towards the completion of its pan-India 4G rollout. Scheduled for June 2025, this nationwide upgrade will mark a significant milestone for the telecom operator, enhancing connectivity, data speeds, and overall service quality. The 4G expansion is expected to bridge the digital divide, particularly in rural and remote areas, supporting India's broader vision of digital inclusion and economic growth.
Sandeep Govil, director, consumer mobility, BSNL board, also confirmed that it does not have any plans for a tariff hike at present, a huge relief for those who are contemplating switching to BSNL after the recent price hike by all three private telcos in India.
BSNL’s 4G network deployment is backed by indigenous technology developed in collaboration with TCS and C-DoT under the government’s “Make in India” initiative. This approach ensures not only technological self-reliance but also contributes to job creation and innovation within the country. Once completed, BSNL’s enhanced infrastructure will position it as a key player in India’s telecom sector, ready to compete with private giants and prepare for the eventual rollout of 5G services.
