The Central Bureau of Investigation rejected claims that a team from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation was in India to investigate a bitcoin-related scam. The investigative agency also clarified that no such request has been made by its US counterpart.
The statement was issued after Congress general secretary in charge Randeep Singh Surjewalaon alleged that an FBI team was in India to investigate a bitcoin scam. He further asked the government to reveal the details of the alleged investigation along with the names of the person being investigated.
Following the allegations, senior officials of CBI said the reports that claim that an FBI team is in India are “speculative, without any basis” and issued with “malafide intent”.
Last year, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala alleged that “illegal transactions worth Rs 5240 crore” occurred over a period of just 2 days on December 1, 2020 and 14 April 2021.
CBI spokesperson RC Joshi said, “Accordingly, the question of according any permission for the probe by Competent Authority in India does not arise. CBI as the National Central Bureau for INTERPOL in India coordinates closely with international law enforcement agencies including FBI.”
