“Everyone is talking about AI and we do not have any AI act in the country. We are in the process of implementing DPDP Act, 2023. AI is all about data and DPDP Act is primarily about personal data. AI is about how data is used for training a model by completely anonymizing the data. It is not easy because all data will have some kind of personal information and making data completely identity neutral is a big challenge. Most of the AI companies never disclose the source of their data. This creates the conflict where DPDP Act says that one cannot use personal data without informed consent and we are using it for training. We are making the whole economy based on AI without resolving this basic issue of who owns the data. In India, government has its own AI cell. Almost all the departments are trying to explore where they can use AI. RBI has launched MuleHunter, an AI-based tool. DOT also use an AI-based intelligence system, which can actually identify whether it is a fake or genuine SIM or genuine or a mule account. So, this DPDP Act is not about AI, but then when you are dealing with AI you have to deal with it. For data life cycle governance, DPDP Act is critical and you have to take care of privacy, cyber security and AI governance. Also, the objective is not to stop AI adoption but to enable AI using personal data in lawful, secure, accountable, ethical and trusted manner.”
