After much anticipation, Google has finally launched its Gemini AI app for iPhone, marking a significant step in expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities to iOS users. The free app is now available on the Apple App Store in 35 languages globally, as confirmed by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on the social media platform X.
The Gemini AI app provides iPhone users with a seamless experience to interact with Google’s AI chatbot via text, voice, or even camera inputs—all without requiring the installation of the main Google app.
Its standout feature, Gemini Live, offers natural conversation capabilities, mimicking the feeling of talking to another person on a call. Users can choose from 10 AI voices and converse in languages including English, Spanish, French, German, and Hindi.
Beyond conversational AI, the app introduces advanced functionalities such as AI-powered image generation using Imagen 3, tools for study assistance, and photo analysis. Moreover, Gemini integrates effortlessly with other Google services through extensions, allowing users to access Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, and Google Maps directly within the app. A noteworthy Live Activity feature enables uninterrupted conversations, even when the device is locked or another app is in use.
The standalone Gemini AI app represents Google’s strategic move to compete with other AI-powered assistants and chatbots by providing a streamlined, dedicated experience for mobile users. While Gemini continues to be accessible via the Google app and web browser, this new offering enhances ease of use with direct homescreen access.
However, there are limitations. Unlike Apple’s Siri, Gemini cannot adjust device settings or directly control other apps. Its scope is primarily restricted to Google’s ecosystem, focusing on delivering a robust but contained AI experience for iOS users.
